The British intelligence MI6 has sent out warnings about using Huawei products, so has the Danish foreign intelligence, DDIS
Should you use Huawei phones ?
This post contains a highly politicly sensitive topic, and we will try to be as unpolitical as possible. Nevertheless, the statements from several intelligence services from the Alliance, that Huawei products are contaminated, they might be able to controll traffic etc. etc. etc. is quite a serious allegation. Is there something to be afraid of for you ?
The answer is – it clearly depends on who you are. The truth is, that Apple is able to do exactly the same, as Huawei is. Actually Apple has a wider reach, because it also controls the software installed in their phones, so they control both the hardware and the software you are using. Huawei phones sold in the West use american software – Google – who also controls anything your phone might do, and they have several times breached this trust, without informing the users – such as you. E.g. Google switched on geo-tracking on all Android phones, so that even people who had turned geo-location and geo-tracking of, Google registered your location.
What should I do ?
Should you use a Huawei phone ? Well, if you are afraid of Chinese tracking, then stay away from any Chinese product. This is both software and hardware. It’s that simple. No Huawei, no WeChat, no China.
On the other hand, if you are afraid that the US will be tracking you, you should stay away from Android (google owned), and if you are enemy of the US state, stay away from Apple as well. You could then use Chinese phones with Chinese operating systems (there are Chinese versions of android out there).
Finally, if you are not enemy of neither the Chinese, nor the US, but just want to be business-smart-secure, you can use any phone out there, complying with necessary security measures. And if you want NO ONE to listen in on you, no one to read what you write … then reconsider if you need the technology, and if, then what and where.
